Urban Market Cafe

Urban Market Cafe
Toronto, Ontario - Canada

Background Context: The existing retail space is converted into an urban market and café space with a rich and interesting spatial sequence. The materials are tough and low-maintenance using textured concrete and dark wood. A set of brass strips run along the floor and up the walls to guide visitors through the space and set boundaries between the market area and caffe. Standing out against the dark walls and textured concrete floor the brass stripes compliment the materials and illuminate the entire space giving a nostalgic feel. The space is divided in half – the first half has a small lounge that defines a casual dining space facing the elongated bar where the open preparation space is grouped behind a custom counter. The other half represents the market place where the costumers can shop for organic and all natural, locally sourced products.
